Overview

Antibiotic resistance has become a major threat to global public health, with a particularly significant impact in developing countries where infections are common and resources are limited. Fueled by the excessive or inappropriate use of antibiotics in human and veterinary medicine, it leads to increased mortality and healthcare costs and reduces the effectiveness of available treatments. In the poultry sector, the intensive use of antibiotics promotes the emergence of resistant bacteria that can be transmitted to humans. In Tunisia, this phenomenon is particularly concerning due to high consumption of antimicrobials and a lack of data to guide control policies. This doctoral project therefore aims to study antibiotic resistance in the Tunisian poultry sector using a “One Health” approach, in order to assess the risks and propose appropriate management and prevention strategies.
